Magical Machu Picchu

However many photos you’ve seen, nothing prepares you for the size and setting of Machu Picchu. Most guests travel by train from Cusco or the Sacred Valley, but you can also arrive on foot: on the classic four-day Inca Trail, or on quieter routes such as the Salkantay or Lares treks. We recommend staying overnight in Aguas Calientes so you can return for a second, quieter visit the next morning. Entry is by timed ticket and Inca Trail permits are limited, so book early. Explore the Amazon

Peru’s slice of the Amazon is easy to reach: a short flight from Cusco or Lima takes you to the rainforest, for three or four nights at a jungle lodge with excellent local guides. When is the best time to visit Peru?

The dry season, from May to September, is the best time to visit Peru, with clear skies in Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, and the best conditions for trekking. April and October are good shoulder months. The wettest months are December to March, and the Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance. The Amazon can be visited all year. Tell us your dates and we’ll plan around the weather.

How many days in Peru is enough?

We recommend at least 13 days for a first visit, enough for Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu at a comfortable pace, with time to adjust to the altitude. Add three or four days for the Amazon or Lake Titicaca, or three weeks to explore more slowly. Read our guide: how long do you need in South America?

How much does a holiday to Peru cost?

How difficult is the Inca Trail?

The classic Inca Trail is about 42 km (26 miles) over four days, and is moderately challenging, mainly because of the altitude: its highest point, Dead Woman’s Pass, is around 4,200 metres. Most reasonably fit walkers manage it with a good guide and time to acclimatise first. If you’d rather not trek, Machu Picchu itself is easy to visit by train, with gentle paths around the site.

Will I get altitude sickness in Peru?

Cusco sits at around 3,400 metres, so most guests feel the altitude for the first day or two. We plan itineraries to help: many begin in the lower Sacred Valley before Cusco, with an easy first day, plenty of water and coca tea. Speak to your doctor before you travel if you have any health concerns.

What is the best way to travel in Peru?

With a private driver and guide, you can travel at your own pace and get the most from each place. Most trips combine short internal flights (for example between Lima and Cusco), private transfers and the scenic train to Machu Picchu, and some of the best experiences are on foot. What is the weather like in Peru?

Peru has three very different climates. The Pacific coast, including Lima, is dry and mild, often grey from June to September. The Andes, including Cusco and Machu Picchu, have warm, sunny days and cold nights in the dry season (May to September). The Amazon is hot and humid all year, with more rain from December to March.
