How Long Do You Need in South America? 2 Weeks, 3 Weeks or a Full Sabbatical
A fortnight (14 days) is the minimum we’d recommend to properly experience one or two South America destinations without rushing. Under two weeks works well for a focused trip like the Galapagos Islands. Three weeks lets you combine multiple countries. A month or more — ideal for sabbaticals, career breaks or retirement — lets you travel slowly across the whole continent.
South America is enormous — genuinely one of the most geographically diverse continents on Earth — and the honest answer to “how long do I need?” depends entirely on what you want from the trip. This guide breaks it down by duration, with real example itineraries for each, so you can work out what’s realistic for the time you have.

How Much Time Does South America Really Need?
As a sustainable travel company, we actively encourage longer, slower trips — typically a minimum of two weeks — because it aligns with how we believe travel should work: fewer flights, deeper experiences, more time to actually absorb a place rather than tick it off. That said, we know not everyone has a month spare, and some guests are combining South America with a wider trip elsewhere. Wouldn’t we all love to be on holiday as long as possible! So here’s an honest breakdown of what each length of holiday can realistically deliver.

South America Trip Length: At a Glance
| Duration | Best for | Realistic scope | From price |
| Under 2 weeks | A focused, single-destination trip | One country or archipelago, done properly | £2,720pp |
| 2 weeks | The sweet spot for most first-time visitors | One country in depth, or two adjoining regions | £2,900pp |
| 3 weeks | Combining multiple countries | 2–3 countries, or one country plus Antarctica | £5,500pp |
| 4 weeks + | Sabbaticals, career breaks, retirement trips | A genuinely continent-wide, slow-paced journey | £12,200pp |

Under 2 Weeks: A Focused, Single-Destination Trip
Lets be clear, we don’t typically suggest less than 14 nights in South America. However if for a specific reason you have less than a fortnight, our honest advice is to resist the temptation to cram in multiple countries. South America’s distances are vast, and internal flights eat into your time fast. Instead, pick one destination and let it breathe.
This is also where we most often recommend the Galapagos Islands specifically — a self-contained archipelago where a shorter trip still feels complete, rather than rushed.
Galapagos Island Hopping Adventure — 8 days from £2,720pp Proof that a shorter trip doesn’t mean a lesser one. This land-based route is built specifically around what a week on the ground can realistically cover — volcanic crater hikes, sea lion kayaking, giant turtle snorkelling — without the padding a longer itinerary might add.
“In just over a week, a land-based route covers more ground than most people expect — you’re not losing days to a boat schedule, so every one counts” – Sam, Galapagos expert
Responsible Galapagos Islands Cruise — 11 days from £7,100pp If you can stretch to 11 days, a cruise opens up more of the archipelago than a land-based week allows — useful if variety of wildlife sightings matters more to you than pace.
Consider under 2 weeks if: you want one genuinely excellent destination rather than a taste of several, or you’re combining South America with a longer trip elsewhere. You’ll be surprised how much you can fall in love with South America in two weeks!
2 Weeks: The Sweet Spot for Most First-Time Visitors
Two weeks is where South America really starts to open up. It’s long enough to properly explore one country in depth — or combine two closely connected regions — without the trip feeling like a rushed checklist.
Peru Active Adventure — 14 days from £3,900pp Two weeks is exactly what a proper Inca Trail trip needs: days to acclimatise in the Sacred Valley beforehand, the multi-day trek itself, and time afterwards in Cusco and Lake Titicaca without feeling rushed straight back to the airport.
“Fourteen days gives you genuine acclimatisation time before the trek — guests who try to compress this into ten days or fewer often feel it on the trail.” — Sam, Founder
Ecuador Highlights & Galapagos Island Hopping — 14 days from £4,500pp A real Travel Differently flagship holiday; this length lets you properly split a fortnight across two very different environments — cloud forest and volcano first, Galapagos wildlife second — rather than compromising on either half.
“Splitting two weeks between mainland Ecuador and the Galapagos works because neither half feels like an add-on — you get a full week in each.” — Sam, Founder
Brazil Rio and Beach Adventure — 14 days from £2,900pp A fortnight here is built around three distinct paces: a few slower days in Paraty, several active days on Ilha Grande, then city energy in Rio — a rhythm that’s hard to fit into anything shorter. Always dreamt of Brazil? you will love this trip.
“Always wanted to see jaguars in the wild in Brazil? I can easily add this on to this already incredible trip” — Sinead, Brazil expert
Consider 2 weeks if: this is your first trip to South America and you want real depth in one place, rather than spreading yourself thin across several. This is basically our Travel Differently ethos.

3 Weeks: Combining Multiple Countries
We love it when we get a request for a trip this long! Three weeks is where multi-country travel genuinely starts to come into its own. You have enough time to cross a border or two without every day being a travel day — though this is also where we start recommending you prioritise: three weeks is generous, but South America will always have more to offer than any trip length allows. Its huge remember.
Chile, Argentina and Brazil Adventure — 21 days from £5,500pp Three weeks is the minimum we’d suggest for an epic three-country trip like this one — it allows roughly a week per country, which is enough for each to feel complete rather than skimming the highlights only.
“This is the holiday length where multi-country travel stops feeling rushed — three destinations, but each still gets proper time rather than a flying visit.” — Sinead, South America Expert
Ecuador, Galapagos and Colombia Adventure — 21 days from £7,700pp Three weeks here means the Galapagos section can run at a genuinely unhurried pace — staying on the islands rather than cruising past them — while still leaving a full week for Colombia afterwards.
Argentina and Antarctica Adventure — 21 days from £16,129pp Getting to Antarctica takes time in itself — several days each way through the Drake Passage — so this holiday accounts for that crossing alongside a proper week of mainland Patagonia beforehand. Its a real once-in-a-lifetime trip
“People are often surprised how much of this three weeks is mainland Patagonia rather than the ship itself — El Chaltén and El Calafate genuinely earn their place in the itinerary.” — Scarlett, Antarctica Expert
Consider 3 weeks if: you want the variety of multiple countries but still need enough time in each one to avoid feeling rushed. Slow travel as its finest.
4 Weeks or More: Sabbaticals, Career Breaks and Retirement Trips
Now things get really interesting. A month or longer is where South America can genuinely be experienced at the pace it deserves — slowly, deeply, without compromise. This is the length of trip we design for guests with career sabbaticals and for retirement travel, where there is both the time and the desire to see the continent properly rather than in fragments.
Peru, Ecuador and Galapagos Adventure Sabbatical — 55 days from £12,200pp At nearly a whopping two months, this trip can afford something a two-week trip never can: genuinely unhurried time in each place, including a full week alone in Peru’s incredible Sacred Valley rather than the two or three days a shorter trip would allow.
“This holiday is something special. It’s only once you get past the month mark that a place like the Sacred Valley stops being a stop on the way to Machu Picchu and starts being a destination in its own right.” — Sam, Founder
Ultimate South America Sabbatical — 55 days from £17,800pp This really is how you ‘do’ South America! Explore five countries, each treated as a genuine destination rather than a stopover, which simply isn’t possible on anything shorter than about two months. You get in all with this trip.
Argentina and Chile In-Depth Sabbatical — 54 days from £18,800pp Nearly two months across two countries sounds long until you break it down: a self-drive section, a multi-day expedition cruise, wine country, a national park, and a Pacific island — each genuinely needs its own week or more. One of our favourite sabbatical trips!
“On a trip this length, we build in a few buffer days on purpose — for weather, for an activity you want more time on, or simply to slow down mid-trip rather than push through.” — Scarlett, Chile & Argentina Expert
Consider 4 weeks+ if: you have the time and budget available and want to experience South America the way we believe it’s best done — slowly, with room to adapt, and without having to choose between destinations. We are obviously bias, but South America would ideally always be explored this way!

Not Sure How Long You Need?
Absolutely every one of the trips above can be adapted — extended, shortened, or combined with another destination entirely. The honest truth is that the “right” length isn’t really about the calendar; it’s about what you want to see and how you like to travel. Each and every trip we design for our guests is individual to them, this is really how you Travel Differently.
Frequently Asked Questions
A week to 10 days is realistic for a single, focused destination like the Galapagos Islands. For most other trips, we recommend at least two weeks to properly explore one country without rushing.
Two weeks is the sweet spot for most first-time visitors — long enough for real depth in one country or region, without needing to compromise on pace.
It’s possible, but we generally recommend three weeks as the minimum for a genuine multi-country trip, so each destination gets enough time rather than becoming a series of transit days.
No single trip can cover all of South America, even at a month or more — the continent is simply too vast. A month or longer does allow for a genuinely immersive, multi-country journey at a slower, more meaningful pace, which is why we recommend it for sabbaticals and career breaks.
Not necessarily. Longer, slower trips often work out more cost-effective per day, since they include more overland travel (rather than flights) and allow for a better mix of accommodation styles across the trip.
Final Thoughts
Have you guessed by now we love longer trips to South America?! There’s no single right answer to how long you need in South America — only what’s right for you, your time, and what you want to see. Whether that’s a focused week in the Galapagos, a classic two-week introduction to Peru, a three-week multi-country adventure, or a full sabbatical crossing the continent, every trip we design is built around your pace, not a fixed template.
