Our Expert Tip

”In the Lake District, visit a Mapuche Weaver to view her traditional skills and techniques during a community visit and learn about their unique ways of life first hand”

Scarlett, Chile Expert

Day 1-2: Santiago

Start in Santiago’s bohemian Lastarria neighbourhood, with two nights at The Singular Santiago, a five-star hotel with a rooftop pool and views over Santa Lucía Hill. On your full day, a private guide and chef take you shopping at the Mercado Central for the day’s catch, then back to the kitchen to cook a Chilean seafood feast together. Evenings are for exploring Lastarria’s cafés, galleries and wine bars.

Day 3-6: Atacama Desert

Fly north to Calama for four all-inclusive nights at Nayara Alto Atacama, a low-slung lodge tucked into a red-rock valley just outside San Pedro. Each evening, plan the next day with the lodge’s guides: perhaps a hike through the Rainbow Valley, a bike ride through a canyon, an early start for the high-altitude lagoons and their flamingos, or a visit to ancient Atacameño villages.

Back at the lodge there are outdoor pools, a spa and an observatory, where astronomers guide you through some of the clearest night skies on Earth.

Day 7-10: The Lake District

Fly south to the Lake District and the forests above Pucón for four nights at Vira Vira, a Relais & Châteaux hacienda on the banks of the Liucura River, with Villarrica Volcano on the skyline.

Full board and daily guided activities are included: raft or fish the river, hike in Huerquehue National Park, ride through native forest, or visit a Mapuche community and meet a weaver (see Scarlett’s tip). Much of what you eat comes from the hacienda’s own farm and cheese dairy.

Day 11-13: Wine Country

End among the vines at Vik Chile, a strikingly designed hotel looking out over the vineyards of the Millahue Valley, south of Santiago. Days are as active or as lazy as you like: tour the winery and taste its blends, hike or ride into the hills, cycle between the vines, or simply sit by the infinity pool with a glass in hand. Full board and activities are included.

Day 14: Santiago

When to Go

Best time for a luxury Chile holiday

The best time for this trip is September to April. The Atacama can be visited all year, the Lake District is at its warmest from December to March, and March and April bring the grape harvest in the wine valleys. Vira Vira closes in May and June, so the full route isn’t available then. In peak season some lodges have maximum stays, so book early.
