Our Expert Tip

”Whilst in Paraty, give the Pico do Mamanguá hike a go! The steep climb is rewarded with incredible views, a seafood lunch and a dip in the sea to cool down.”

Sam, Founder

Day 1-3: Paraty

Transfer from Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo airport to the seaside gem of Paraty, staying at Pousada do Sandi. Take a walking tour of its cobbled colonial streets, and kayak across the bay to nearby mangrove forests.

For something different, take a private jeep tour into the Atlantic Forest to explore its walking trails and waterfalls. While you’re here, visit a traditional cachaça distillery for a taste (literally) of Paraty’s cultural heritage.

Day 4-9: Ilha Grande

Continue along the Green Coast to Ilha Grande, a car-free island reached by speedboat from the mainland, and settle into O Sitio, an idyllic beachfront hotel. Choose from a range of memorable activities: a private guided hike to Lopes Mendes beach, regarded by many as the most beautiful in Brazil; the climb to the Pico do Papagaio viewpoint; a boat trip to the postcard-perfect Blue Lagoon; or a traditional Polynesian outrigger canoe excursion.

There’s also plenty of time to relax and simply enjoy the jungle, sand and sea views. Read more about Ilha Grande in our guide to the 10 best things to do in Brazil.

Day 10-13: Rio de Janeiro

End your trip in Rio de Janeiro, where mountains, forest and beaches meet. We recommend at least four nights at Arpoador Inn to fit in Corcovado, for the statue of Christ the Redeemer, and Sugarloaf Mountain, plus a guided hike through the Tijuca Forest for a different view over the city. Spend an evening exploring Rio’s famous nightlife with our local guide, and leave time to relax on Ipanema and Copacabana beaches.

Day 14: Depart

Transfer to Rio de Janeiro airport for your flight home. Have three weeks? Our Slow Travel: Southern Brazil In Depth adds Curitiba, the Serra do Mar railway and car-free Ilha do Mel.

When to Go

Best time for a Brazil beach holiday

The best months for this trip are March to June and September to November, with warm, mostly dry weather on the Green Coast and fewer crowds. December to February is peak summer: hot, busy, and with more afternoon storms. June to August is cooler but often sunny, and still pleasant for hiking and exploring Rio.
