Detailed Itinerary
Day 1-3: Bogota
Our slow travel holiday to Colombia starts in vibrant and colourful Bogota. The city steeped in the old and new! You start in the beating heart of Colombia’s culinary soul at the iconic Paloquemao Market, a must-visit place you could try a different fruit every day of the year, without repetition. Explore colonial downtown on foot with its museums, restaurants, and buzz. Find bars peppered amid 300-year-old homes, churches, and convents before visiting the most extensive collection of pre-Hispanic gold works in the world at the Museo de Oro.
Day 4 – 6: Yopal
Head to Colombia’s cowboy country. This ecological paradise is a great introduction to the rich flora and fauna on offer. Hike one of the many the trails and why not explore on a horseback safari through the floodplains. A real adventure; you’ll look out for birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and fish in their natural habitats. Visit a working ranch, learn about milking and working in the corral before taking a boat to have a go at traditional fishing. End the day with a sundowner watching over the savannah. Back to nature and away from cities.
Day 7 – 11: Pasto
Get away from the masses. Known as Colombia’s “Surprise City” this beautiful city in the South of the country preserves quaint charm and traditional ways of life. Explore traditional workshops trading in woodworking, harvesting and decorative varnishing. With your guide learn all about Carnival “a la Colombia” at the Carnival museum. In Las Lajas Sanctuary you’ll find the impressive gothic basilica built in the early 1900’s. Enjoy a day meandering on foot before a panoramic cable car ride. Finally, head to La Cocha Lagoon, a volcanic crater lake surrounded by Swiss style houses on the shore. A unique sight.
Day 12 – 14: Medellin
Medellin has so much to see. Famous for its colourful history but also the lesser known pretty villages nearby. Explore Carmen de Viboral with its ceramics and pottery. Try your hand at the skills in a unique workshop. Visit the village of Santa Elena; famous for flower farming which thrives in the local climate. These “Silletas” are now the national symbol of Colombia. Of course no visit would be complete without seeing Gutape, the giant rock to climb for amazing views of the surrounding lakes. End your fascinating time here with a tour of Comuna 13, the now thriving neighbourhood in Medellin’s centre. Packed full of recent history, Comuna 13 shows how a troubled past can be turned into something inspiring.
Day 15 – 17: Coffee Region
The next stop on your slow travel holiday through Colombia is the famous coffee region. With your guide explore the private coffee estate of the Valencia Family and learn the coffee process from bean to cup. And of course then taste the freshest coffee of your life! Head to Solento, simply is not to be missed. This endearing Andean town has a luscious landscapes is the gateway to the iconic Coroca valley. This is the time for the outdoor adventures… choose from many hiking routes, explore the traditional artisans, with weaving and basketry work at the forefront of their craft. Take your time here and immerse yourself.
Day 18 – 21: Cartagena & Rosario Islands
And finally to Cartagena. Cartagena de Indias is the gem of the Caribbean coast, but there is more to see than just the clear blue sea. With your guide visit the Matute national park, a paradise for nature where you’ll spot native birds and howler monkeys hiding in the canopy. Enjoy a tour of the beautiful old town and the Getsemani neighborhood. Now for some much deserved relaxation. Finish on the incredible Rosario Islands, with crystal clear waters and delicious fresh seafood. Snorkel, kayak or relax on the beach before heading back to the city.
Day 22: Cartagena
Back to Cartagena for your final day in this incredibly diverse country. We suggest keeping these days free to take things slowly and at your own pace, or we can add a private guide to whatever areas you would like to explore and know more about.
