1. Machu Picchu holiday

We can’t talk about what to see in Peru without mentioning of course, Machu Picchu. This ancient Inca City really is one of the wonders of the world. Its an incredible, spiritual, unique and mysterious site that keeps drawing people from around the world. While we don’t love the term ‘bucket list travel’ a Peru Machu Picchu visit is a definite.

You can choose to arrive by train, or take the iconic Inca Trail to the site. Arriving at Machu Picchu for the first time really will be one of those pinch-me travel moments. We always include a private guided tour to Machu Picchu, to give you the best and most bespoke experience. Where possible your guide will avoid the crowds and take you to viewpoints to capture some amazing pictures and the soak up the magical energy. Take your time to meander through the famous Citadel; see the terraces, historic ruins, and local alpacas…all set against the back drop of the imposing Huayna Picchu Mountain.

You can either take the train to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo or Cusco, or chose to include the journey in a trek. More on the Inca Trail below…

What is the best month to go to Machu Picchu?

Between April and October. However the wonderful thing about a holiday to Peru, is that Machu Picchu is pretty much a year round destination.  There are months which are more popular, mainly April to October as this is dry season. Peak travel months are June and August, and the crowd numbers will be at the highest then. If you can travel outside of these months you will have a quieter Machu Picchu holiday.

2. Explore Cusco

Cusco is an incredible city, and a must-visit on your trip to Peru. This Imperial city of the Incas is rich in culture, colours and places to explore. One of our favourite things to do in Cusco is head out with our expert guide to visit the iconic local market. A genuine destination point for Peruvians; here you will see the colours, scents, flavours and traditions of both past and modern Cusco.

Continue to Sacsayhuaman, built with ginormous blocks of stone on the outskirts of the city. Amble through cobbled streets, soaking up amazing views, experiencing the artisan neighbourhood of San Blas. Visit the cathedral and Plaza de Armas, all the while chatting to our friendly local guide who can point out the best places to grab some local cuisine and a Pisco Sour. A dream day in Peru.

How many days do you need in Cusco Peru?

We always suggest a minimum of 3 nights in Cusco. As with all our slow travel holidays, the longer you have on your Peru trip the better. That said, we appreciate time can be limited, so we always suggest a minimum of 3 nights in Cusco.  There is so much to do in this fascinating city, you could easily spend a week here and not run out of places to explore.

Is Cusco a walkable city?

Yes, Cusco is an easy city to walk around. We always suggest a walking tour with our guide as the best way to see Cusco. 3. Visit The Sacred Valley, Peru

One of our absolute best things to do in Peru, is visit the Sacred Valley. So incredible is the Sacred Valley, we often suggest to our guests to leave a week to fully explore this amazing destination. The Sacred Valley stretches between Machu Picchu and Cusco, and is vast and varied in its natural scenery and mixture of cultures and traditions. This is the real Peru.

In the Sacred Valley you will see valleys peppered with unique villages, colourful markets and of course historic Inca ruins. There is so much to do in the Sacred Valley, from active adventures like hiking, to rich and deeply immersive cultural experiences. One of our favourite things to on a Peru holiday, is spend time with a traditional Andean community. The Misminay community live in stunning mountain ranges of the Sacred Valley and offer a warm welcome on this unique tour.

They will show you traditional Andean customs and talk about their way of life and heritage. Choose to have a go yourself at cooking, brick making, textile weaving, Quecha lessons or an Andean blessing. Take a look here at how best to include this incredible experience into your own Peru holiday.

How high is the Sacred Valley compared to Cusco?

The Sacred Valley its at 2000 -3000 meters, and is a great place to acclimatize at the start or your Peru holiday. It sits lower than Cusco, so we suggest starting here for 4 or 5 nights to get used to the altitude.

Should I stay in Cusco or The Sacred Valley?

100% stay in the Sacred Valley if you want to include this in your Peru holiday. We suggest basing yourself in one of the beautiful boutique lodges in the Sacred Valley. This will give you more time to explore all the valley has to offer, and ensure money from your holiday goes right into the heart of the local community.

4. Hike the ‘other’ Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow Mountain in Peru is famous for its Instagram-worthy colours and stripes. Whilst visually impressive, we prefer to suggest a really cool, less visited option. As our name suggests, we like to Travel Differently.  The truly impressive Mount Palccoyo is a fantastic alternative to the often over-touristed Rainbow Mountain in Peru, and we think our guests will love it.

After being picked up by your private guide in Cusco and driven around 3 hours through unreal Andean scenery, you arrive at the small town of Combapata to start the journey to the mighty Palccoyo ‘coloured Mountain’. Learn about why the mountain has such unique colouring, hike to the stone forest at the breathtaking Mount Ausangate snow peak viewpoint. Ensure you have a good camera on your Peru tour, as this will be one of the highlights. Our expert guide will make sure you go at your own pace, soak it all up and have enough time to really appreciate this amazing sight.

Why is Rainbow Mountain Peru colourful?
