Rainy Season Myths in Costa Rica: Why the Green Season Might Be Your Best Trip Yet

Introduction: Rainy Season Myths in Costa Rica

The rainy season in Costa Rica (roughly May to November, with a mini-dry spell in July–August known as veranillo) is one of the best-kept secrets in Central American travel. Here our experts explain why the myths don’t hold up and how smart itinerary planning turns the green season into a genuine advantage.

Costa Rica Expert Scarlett :

”I have been fortunate enough to visit Costa Rica in the rainy season on a number of occasions and Costa Rica is one of the greenest and lushest destinations on the continent thanks to the rain- it makes the country as beautiful as it is and if it does rain, it’s often in short bursts rather than all day, leaving plenty of time to get out and explore. There’s something incredibly special about seeing Costa Rica at its most vibrant, with the jungle, wildlife and landscapes all at their absolute best.

Myth #1: “It Rains All Day, Every Day”

The reality: Costa Rica’s rainy season follows a remarkably predictable pattern. Mornings are typically bright and clear perfect for wildlife walks, volcano hikes, and canopy tours. Rain usually arrives in the afternoon, often as a dramatic tropical downpour that lasts a couple of hours, before clearing again by evening. In many ways, the rhythm is wonderfully convenient. It forces you to get out and explore in the morning and then slow down and relax come the afternoon.

The Caribbean coast operates differently, with rain more evenly distributed year-round, which is worth factoring into your itinerary (more on that below).

Our expert Thoughts:

Recently in the Osa Peninsula during the green season, I spent a beautiful sunny morning on the beach practising yoga, followed by a boat ride out on the gulf where we sailed alongside a huge pod of dolphins. By late afternoon, the heavens opened in a warm tropical downpour, leaving me with no choice but to retreat to a hammock with a cold beer and my book. For me, that is exactly the beauty of Costa Rica in green season: bright, wildlife-filled days, dramatic bursts of rain and landscapes that feel impossibly lush because of it.” Scarlett, Costa Rica Expert.

Myth #2: “Wildlife Disappears in the Rain”

The reality: The opposite is true. The green season is when Costa Rica truly earns its reputation as one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.

  • Sea turtles: Tortuguero’s famous turtle nesting season runs from July to October. Green and leatherback turtles haul themselves onto the beach in remarkable numbers, which is an experience only possible during the rainy months.
  • Humpback whales: The Osa Peninsula and Drake Bay see humpback whales from July to November, calving in the warm Pacific waters.
  • Frogs and amphibians: Reduced visitor numbers and the wet microhabitats bring out poison dart frogs, red-eyed tree frogs, and glass frogs in spectacular abundance.
  • Resplendent quetzal: The cloud forests of San Gerardo de Dota see these extraordinary birds year-round, but the lush green season foliage makes them even more spectacular to photograph.
  • Baby animals: Many species give birth in the wet season, giving wildlife enthusiasts a rare chance to spot young sloths, monkeys, and peccaries.

Our Expert Thoughts:

We recently had a family travel in August, who witnessed huge numbers of turtles come to lay their eggs on the beach in Tortuguero and it was one the most amazing experiences they have had to date.” Sinead, Costa Rica Expert.

Myth #3: “The Osa Peninsula Becomes Inaccessible”

The reality:  From May to July, rain is often limited to short afternoon showers, with sunny mornings and cooler temperatures, while the rainforest feels at its most vibrant and alive. Corcovado National Park and the wider Osa Peninsula do require more planning at this time, some tracks get muddier, and a handful of smaller airstrips have limited schedules. But with the right logistics, this works in your favour. Visitor numbers drop significantly, meaning you genuinely experience what National Geographic called “one of the most biologically intense places on Earth” in near solitude.

We plan Osa itineraries year-round and know exactly which lodges, guides, and access routes to use depending on the season.

Our Expert Thoughts:

From July to October, you can witness humpback whales with their calves in the Pacific waters which is an incredible experience. At either Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge or Playa Cativo Lodge, you can sit on the beach and watch them play and breach from the shore which is an incredible experience.” Scarlett, Costa Rica Expert

Myth #4: “There is no point going to the beaches at this time”

The reality: Costa Rica’s Pacific coast beaches, particularly the Nicoya Peninsula can see drier, sunnier weather than you’d expect even in the green season, especially in July and August during veranillo. The Caribbean coast has its own microclimate, with drier conditions from February to April and again in September–October, which can be sequenced cleverly into an itinerary for those who want guaranteed beach time.

For families or travellers who want a balance of wildlife, adventure, and coast, a well-designed green season itinerary can absolutely include beach time, you just need to know where to go and when and be prepared for the occasional downpour in the afternoons.

Our Expert Thoughts:

“Weather is unpredictable wherever you travel in the world, and Costa Rica is no exception. We send guests there throughout the year, including during the green season, and it remains one of our favourite times to visit. I’ll be spending time on Costa Rica’s Pacific beaches this July, followed by Scarlett in August, and we both love travelling there at this time of year: the landscapes are beautifully lush, the beaches are quieter and the rain, when it comes, tends to feel like part of the experience rather than a reason not to go.” Sinead, Costa Rica Expert

Frequently Asked Questions: Costa Rica Rainy Season

Is Costa Rica safe to visit in the rainy season?

Yes. Costa Rica is a stable, well-visited destination year-round. Roads in more remote areas can be slower to navigate after heavy rain, which is why having a knowledgeable local guide and driver matters something we always include in our bespoke itineraries.

What should I pack for the rainy season?

Lightweight waterproofs, quick-dry clothing, and decent waterproof walking boots or trail shoes. You won’t need heavy kit temperatures remain warm throughout. A dry bag for cameras and electronics is worth having in the Osa Peninsula.

Will I see less wildlife in the rainy season?

No, in many cases you’ll see more. See Myth #2 above for the full breakdown.

Can I still do activities like zip-lining and white-water rafting?

Yes. Arenal’s adventure activities run year-round. White-water rafting is actually often better in the green season when rivers are fuller and wilder.

If I want beach in the green season, where should I go?

The secret is Guanacaste, the northwestern province. It sits in a rain shadow and has a dramatically drier microclimate than the rest of the country even in the “green season” you’ll typically get sunny mornings with afternoon showers that cool things down nicely. Hotels are a little larger here and so for something more laid back and boutique we’d recommend staying slightly further south and looking at the Nicoya Peninsula.
