One of the most famous local specialities is empanadas. They consist of crispy dough stuffed with ingredients like beef, onions and raisins, which is then baked or fried. Another classic Chilean dish is Cazuela.

This hearty delicacy features a stew filled with beef, chicken or lamb, along with pumpkin, corn and potato. Typical ingredients to expect throughout dishes during your holiday to Chile include squash, potatoes, onions, rice and tomatoes. You’ll also find most plates garnished with fresh coriander or parsley.

The country has a stable political environment, relatively low crime rates compared to some other Latin American countries, and a well-developed infrastructure for tourism.

That being said, it’s always best to take precautions to ensure you remain as safe as possible during your holiday in Chile. You can do this by keeping up to date on travel advisories and current events and keeping a careful eye on your belongings and surroundings.

When planning Peru holidays, it is important to British travellers visiting Chile for less than 90 days do not require a visa. Upon arrival, immigration authorities will issue you a ‘Tarjeta de Turismo – Tourist Card,’ which you must keep safe and present when departing the country.

When to Travel

Chile’s length means several climates run simultaneously; dry and arid in the north, cold and luscious in the south, with a varying Mediterranean feel in the centre of the country. Peak summer season runs from December to February when Patagonia experiences near-perfect trekking conditions, whilst the shoulder seasons (Oct-Nov & Mar-Apr) offers fewer crowds.

Getting There

British Airways fly direct overnight from London Heathrow to Santiago (14-15 hours), from where there are excellent links across the country. With the return flight usually schedule to depart around 1pm, we recommend spending your final night back in Santiago or the nearby winelands for a relaxed end to your holiday.
